Day 1

THE FLIGHT OVER

180_image.jpg

Here we are in the VIP lounge at New Kowloon Airport. Luckily we bumped into Mark, friend of Jenny's Literacy Leader from Mataura School who invited us in. No time for showers or changes of clothes so went on to Heathrow feeling hot and bothered.

So pleased to find our hotel after minimal fuss and be able to settle down to a nice meal and a comfortable bed. We sleep very well that night. It was a great flight over but not for the faint hearted. With only two and a half hours break in Hong Kong it made the flying time an ordeal in the end. Next time we would book a layover at the airport.

Day 2

LONDON

Our hotel is off Earl's Court Road, small room and endless stairs but great location. Have begun exploring nearby - great shopping area at Shepherds Bush. Massive Westfield with a multitude of luxury shops and people everywhere - and it's only Thursday night! We have found a local pub opposite the Earl's Court train station which has welcomed us like long lost friends. A couple of Irish waitresses have been a great help and are always friendly. Great start to our London - we will return to this area three times in our tour.

Day 3

EXPLORING LONDON

We have spent today travelling around the local area shopping, eating and exploring. We took the tube at Earl's Court (photo) and went to Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush. Great areas for both Paul & Jo and Rachel to reminisce about. They were here some time ago now but the memories will be like yesterday. It was wet most of the day so we spent a lot of time scampering from shop to shop. Still tired with some jet lag so were early to bed after a meal in the Shepherds Bush area - a very average Thai meal that looked much better than it was!

Day 4

LONDON

Up early today. Packed ready to head north and had breakfast at our favourite local pub Courtfield. Had front seats for the All Black/Australia game. Great result! We thoroughly enjoyed watching the Aussies getting well beaten - very encouraging for the ABs and their World Cup quest. There were several other Kiwis there although we managed to get the prime seats - had a great chat during the game with guy from the NZ who now lives in New York. He knew a lot about NZ rugby and we were on the same wavelength throughout the game

We took the tube out to Heathrow to pick up rental. What a nightmare! It took two hours to eventually get a car and head away to Cambridge. We had a welcome afternoon tea in a wee cafe in the heart of University area of Cambridge and then headed off to our hotel in Huntingdon. Staying at the Huntingdon Marriott which is a bit plush for what we will need to get used to later on our trip but a good deal so we will enjoy.

Day 5

CAMBRIDGE

We had a busy day looking around Cambridge. What a beautiful city! Based around the University & Colleges and full of glorious old buildings and quaint narrow streets. The centre of the city was full of tourists & buses, mostly Japanese groups today. We did some driving around the suburbs too, some of it not intentionally, and we were impressed by the beautiful old homes and gardens. We had a coffee near Kings College (photo) and near a lovely river with dozens of punts (photo). We were pestered by people trying to sell us river cruises but otherwise had a great time.

We drove on to Nottingham in the afternoon. We walked around the city centre but found no sign of Robin Hood. It was very pleasant without being too memorable. Tomorrow we'll visit Trent Bridge Cricket Ground and Byron's house before heading off to Stourport
